Local interest

Walkers, cyclists and tourists – look no further for an unrivalled selection of maps, guidebooks, walking guides and local history! We always keep the OS Landranger and Explorer maps to the area in stock and offer fast ordering for anything not on the shelves. We also have a great fondness for the work of artists Eric Ravilious and Eric Slater, who captured the essence of the South Downs in their prints and paintings, and always keep in stock the beautiful collections of Ravilious’ works published by the Mainstone Press, and the slim volume ‘Slater’s Sussex’ published by James Trollope.

Other local books of note which are hard to track down elsewhere are Janet Pennington’s History of Chanctonbury Ring, Caroline Meeson’s History of Steyning Grammar School, and the Story of the Steyning Grammar School Heritage Quilts. All these titles and many more are available for secure ordering from our online store.

We like to support local writers and have helped many Steyning residents get their self-published books off to a celebratory start with launches and talks, as well as organising a short-story competition for the biennial Steyning Arts Festival, but we are afraid that we cannot always extend the same service to writers who hail from further afield, unless their book has a particular local relevance. We are generally happy to stock single copies of local writer’s books on a sale-or-return basis, subject to our usual restrictions of space and quality!
